Society of St. Andrew

Nov 17, 2023

Society of St. Andrew is a gleaning organization working throughout the state of Indiana. They organize volunteers to glean farmers’ excess produce from fields and farmers markets to donate directly to local hunger relief organizations. Farmers benefit by gleaning as their food does not go to waste, there is no liability on their donation (covered under the Good Samaritan Act) or having volunteers in the fields (all volunteers sign a waiver with through us), and they receive a tax statement at the end of the year recording their donations. Volunteers engage with farmers, learn about food waste and food insecurity in their own communities. Hunger relief agencies benefit by having this fresh, nutritious food to share with their clients, free of charge. Gleaning is an age-old concept still at work in 2023!
