Sweet Corn Donation

Almost 60 dozen bags of sweet corn were delivered Thursday morning to the Supplemental United Food Pantry of Southern LaPorte County in Hanna and are pictured here.  Justene Charlesworth, of the LaCrosse HS Leo’s Club, met Carolyn Homan, a 28 year volunteer of the Pantry, to make the delivery.  Justene’s brother, Riley Charlesworth, is the owner of “How Sweet It Is” sweet corn.  With an abundant crop of more than they can sell at their regular location, the J-MARt BP in Wanatah, Justene decided to call upon fellow Leos to help pick over 700 ears.  Patrons of the Pantry on Thursday afternoon were each given a bag or two of fresh picked sweet corn.

This is Riley Charlesworth’s third year raising sweet corn, a business he took over when family-friend Elwood Grieger retired from producing and selling the crop in Wanatah.  “How Sweet It Is” has been recognized as a member of “Indiana Grown”, an organization developed by the Indiana State Department of Agriculture as a statewide, all-inclusive and collaborative program promoting Indiana-produced agricultural products. Charlesworth hopes to be selling sweet corn at the J-MARt BP in Wanatah for at least another week.
