Cider and mead may often be confused with beer and wine, but they are certainly their own unique beverages. Many wineries and breweries produce cider or mead along with their other offerings, but each has its own distinct flavor and characteristics.
Both cider and mead have been around for a long time, and mead is often considered the oldest fermented beverage in the world! Many times it is described as a combination of wine and beer with some having more similarities to one or the other. Mead can be fruity or spicy and flavored with honey, berries, spices and more!
Unlike mead, cider is a fermented drink made from unfiltered apple juice, and is known commonly as hard cider to distinguish it from non-alcoholic versions. They are sometimes carbonated and can range from sweet to dry in taste, many having additional flavors. Not just any apple can be used to make hard cider, and in fact, there are specific cider apple varieties!
We’ve gathered all of the Indiana Grown members who produce hard cider, mead or both into a trail throughout the state. If you aren’t into traditional beer, wine or spirits, this trail could be the perfect solution! Download your own copy below and enjoy exploring the world of cider and mead!
