See below for a special message from the Indiana State Department of Health regarding farmers markets:
Dear partners,
We know that this has been a challenging time for farmers market managers and vendors across Indiana. ISDH is doing everything possible to support you as you provide access to fresh, local foods to Hoosiers. There has been considerable confusion around the governor’s executive order and what it means for farmers markets. Specifically, the designation in the order of “certified farmers markets” as essential businesses. As you know, there is no state-level certification for farmers markets, so many local markets have been unsure whether or not they are permitted to operate.
The short answer is, YES, farmers markets are considered essential, and are permitted to continue operations. We will share more details with you as they are available. Certified is meant to indicate that any local permitting requirements are met. As with all other essential businesses that remain operational, farmers markets are urged to follow CDC guidelines related to social distancing. Market managers, please see this resource from the Farmers Market Coalition for further guidance. Producers, please see this guidance created by Purdue. Additionally, ISDH has released food safety guidance in both English and Spanish.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to ISDH with any questions or concerns. We will navigate these uncertain times together.
Yours in health,
